Pool alkalinity calculator
Alkalinity is the buffer that stops pH swinging. Most pool guides aim for 80 to 120 ppm. The CDC's model code for public pools allows 60 to 180 ppm.
To raise alkalinity 10 ppm
| Pool size | Baking soda |
|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 11 oz |
| 10,000 gal | 1.4 lb |
| 15,000 gal | 2.1 lb |
| 20,000 gal | 2.8 lb |
| 30,000 gal | 4.2 lb |
That is 1.4 lb per 10,000 gallons for each 10 ppm. Baking soda barely moves pH, which is why it is the right tool here.
To lower alkalinity 10 ppm
| Pool size | Muriatic acid 31.45% |
|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 13 fl oz |
| 10,000 gal | 26 fl oz |
| 15,000 gal | 1.2 qt (38 fl oz) |
| 20,000 gal | 1.6 qt (51 fl oz) |
| 30,000 gal | 2.4 qt (77 fl oz) |
Acid lowers pH faster than alkalinity, so this takes several rounds. See how to lower alkalinity.
Add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals, one at a time, with the pump running. Wear gloves and eye protection, and never mix products.
