Standard pool sizes
There is no official standard for a home pool, but builders and kit makers keep to a set of common sizes. These are the ones you will see quoted most often.
Common sizes by use
| Type | Typical size | Gallons, about |
|---|---|---|
| Plunge pool | 6 × 12 to 10 × 20 ft | 2,424 to 6,732 |
| Small backyard | 10 × 20 to 12 × 24 ft | 5,984 to 8,618 |
| Family | 14 × 28 to 16 × 32 ft | 13,196 to 17,235 |
| Large | 18 × 36 to 20 × 40 ft | 26,661 to 32,914 |
| Lap pool | 8 × 40 to 10 × 75 ft | 10,772 to 25,247 |
Those ranges are typical sizes for planning. Your builder and local rules decide what fits.
How to choose
- Check your setbacks first: local rules on distance from property lines and buildings often decide your maximum size.
- Count swimmers, not guests: most pools see only a few people at a time.
- Size affects running costs: chemicals, heating and water scale with gallons.
