Pool salt calculator
Most salt systems want around 3,200 ppm. Hayward says its AquaRite works best near 3,200 ppm and operates from 2,700 to 3,400 ppm. Use the figure in your own generator's manual if it differs.
Salt to reach 3,200 ppm from fresh water
| Pool size | Salt | 40 lb bags |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 134 lb | 4 |
| 10,000 gal | 267 lb | 7 |
| 15,000 gal | 401 lb | 11 |
| 20,000 gal | 534 lb | 14 |
| 30,000 gal | 801 lb | 21 |
The sum is simple: 1 ppm is 1 mg per liter, so each 1,000 gallons needs 8.34 lb for every 1,000 ppm.
Which salt to buy
Use pool salt that is at least 99% pure. Avoid rock salt, and anything with anti-caking agents or iodine, which can stain surfaces. Salt never leaves the water except by splash-out, backwash or draining, so top up only after testing.
Test with a salt meter or strips, since a generator's own reading can drift. Too little salt and the cell produces less chlorine; too much and it can shut off and damage equipment.
