Pool stabilizer calculator
Stabilizer (cyanuric acid, or CYA) protects chlorine from sunlight. Outdoor pools commonly aim for 30 to 50 ppm, and salt pools often run a little higher.
To raise stabilizer 10 ppm
| Pool size | Stabilizer |
|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 7 oz |
| 10,000 gal | 13 oz |
| 15,000 gal | 1.3 lb |
| 20,000 gal | 1.7 lb |
| 30,000 gal | 2.5 lb |
Each 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons takes about 13 oz. Liquid stabilizers are less concentrated, so follow the label for those.
Too much stabilizer
High CYA lets chlorine read fine while working slowly. CDC guidance for pools with stabilizer calls for at least 2 ppm of chlorine; many owners keep free chlorine at 7.5% of CYA or more. Nothing cheap removes CYA, so partial draining is the usual fix.
The CDC recommends against cyanuric acid and stabilized chlorine products in hot tubs.
