Pool pump size calculator
Pump sizing starts with turnover: how long the pump takes to move the whole pool through the filter. Eight hours is a common target for home pools.
GPM by pool size
| Pool size | 6 hr | 8 hr | 10 hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 gal | 14 | 10 | 8 |
| 10,000 gal | 28 | 21 | 17 |
| 15,000 gal | 42 | 31 | 25 |
| 20,000 gal | 56 | 42 | 33 |
| 30,000 gal | 83 | 63 | 50 |
From flow to horsepower
Horsepower alone does not tell you the flow. A pump's output depends on resistance from pipes, filter and fittings, so read the flow at your system's resistance on the maker's pump curve. Choose a variable-speed pump if you can: running slower for longer moves the same water with less energy.
Check the flow against your filter's rating.
