How much sand for a pool filter?
Most residential sand filters take #20 silica sand, with grains around 0.45 to 0.55 mm. The amount depends on the tank.
Typical sand by tank
| Tank | Sand | 50 lb bags |
|---|---|---|
| 16 in | 100 lb | 2 |
| 18 in | 150 lb | 3 |
| 21 in | 200 lb | 4 |
| 24 in | 300 lb | 6 |
These are typical figures from filter listings, such as Hayward's S166, S180, S210 and S244. Models vary: Pentair lists about 250 lb for a Sand Dollar SD60 and 300 lb for an SD70. Your filter's label is the final word.
Changing the sand
Sand often lasts several years. Change it when the water will not clear despite good chemistry, or backwashes come closer together. Cover the standpipe before you pour, half-fill the tank with water to cushion the laterals, and rinse the new sand before filtering.
